Caledonian Braves maintained their perfect start to the Scottish Lowland Football League (West) season with an entertaining 6-3 victory over Cumnock Juniors FC at Alliance Park on Saturday afternoon.
Having opened their campaign with an impressive 3-2 away win at Gretna 2008, the Braves made it maximum points from their opening two league fixtures with a clinical attacking display, although Cumnock deserve credit for refusing to give up in a thrilling second half.
The home side started brightly and controlled possession from the opening whistle, pinning Cumnock back inside their own half. Their positive approach was rewarded in the 21st minute when the Braves broke the deadlock following a flowing attacking move.
Brimming with confidence, the Braves continued to press forward and doubled their advantage just seven minutes later before adding a third only three minutes after that. The quickfire goals left Cumnock shell-shocked as the home side played some excellent attacking football, moving the ball with pace and purpose.
Cumnock struggled to establish any rhythm during the opening 45 minutes and found it difficult to contain the Braves' relentless attacking threat as the hosts deservedly carried a commanding 3-0 lead into the interval.
The visitors emerged after the break with renewed determination and enjoyed a much brighter start to the second half, but just as they looked capable of reducing the deficit, the Braves struck again in the 54th minute with a clinical counter-attack to make it 4-0 and seemingly put the contest beyond doubt.
To their credit, Cumnock responded immediately, pulling a goal back just three minutes later to give their travelling support something to cheer. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly dented when the Braves restored their four-goal cushion only two minutes later, making it 5-1.
Rather than allowing their heads to drop, Cumnock continued to battle and gradually grew into the game. Their persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when they netted a second goal, and confidence visibly flowed through the side.
The visitors sensed an unlikely comeback and deservedly grabbed a third goal ten minutes from time after another well-worked attacking move. With momentum beginning to swing in Cumnock's favour, the Braves showed their quality once again by delivering the decisive blow in the 87th minute, scoring their sixth goal of the afternoon to finally end any hopes of a dramatic late revival.
While the final scoreline reflected the Braves' attacking quality and clinical finishing, Cumnock's spirited second-half response ensured the contest remained entertaining until the closing stages.
The victory sees Caledonian Braves maintain their 100% start to the league campaign, taking maximum points from their opening two matches and continuing to build early-season momentum. For Cumnock Juniors, it was a frustrating afternoon as they suffered their first defeat of the campaign after previously recording one win and one draw, although their resilience in the second half will provide positives to build on ahead of their next fixture.
