CALEDONIAN BRAVES 2 - 2 DARVEL FC

(3 - 2 AFTER PENALTIES)

This was a cup tie that had everything — goals, controversy, bookings, a sending off, penalties and a dramatic finish at Alliance Park.

The first half was evenly contested, with both sides probing for an opening but with few clear-cut chances. Just as the game looked set to reach the interval goalless, Caledonian Braves struck in the 44th minute, finishing from close range to take a slender lead into the break.

The drama continued after the half-time whistle when the referee approached Darvel manager Nacho Novo and showed him a red card. The exact reason was unclear, although Novo had already been booked during the opening half.

Half-time: Caledonian Braves 1–0 Darvel FC

Darvel emerged for the second half with real purpose and were level within three minutes of the restart. From that point, the visitors took control for long spells, playing with intensity and closing the Braves down aggressively whenever they attempted to build possession.

Despite Darvel’s pressure, they were caught on the counter in the 70th minute when the Braves were awarded a penalty. The decision appeared contentious and prompted a strong reaction from the Darvel bench, with further yellow cards shown, but the spot-kick was converted confidently to restore the Braves’ lead.

Darvel refused to fold. They continued to push forward, pressing the home side high and forcing them into hurried decisions. Their persistence was rewarded in the 88th minute, when a powerful finish from just inside the box flew home to make it 2–2 and spark jubilant celebrations on the Darvel bench.

A frantic spell of added time followed, but neither side could find a winner, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.

In the end, it was Caledonian Braves who held their nerve from the spot, edging the shootout to book their place in the next round.

Darvel left Alliance Park bitterly disappointed after a spirited comeback and an excellent second-half display, but the Braves survive a major scare and progress after one of the most dramatic cup ties of the round.
