Match Report
POLLOK 5 - 1 ALBION ROVERS
In front of a fantastic crowd of over 836 Pollok Football Club produced a polished five-star performance at Newlandsfield Park, running out 5–1 winners over an energetic Albion Rovers FC side in an entertaining six-goal contest.
The first half was fairly evenly matched, with both sides working hard and looking to gain control without creating too many clear openings. The breakthrough finally came in the 35th minute when Pollok were awarded a penalty, which they confidently converted to take the lead.
That advantage did not last long. Some sloppy defending allowed Albion Rovers back into the match in the 43rd minute, and the visitors made the most of the opportunity to level the score.
Pollok responded almost immediately.
Just two minutes later, in the 45th minute, they restored their lead from close range, and before Albion had time to settle again, Pollok struck once more in the 47th minute with a simple tap-in to make it 3–1.
Half-time: Pollok 3–1 Albion Rovers
Pollok came flying out at the start of the second half and, within 30 seconds of the restart, had the ball in the net again for a fourth goal. From that point on, the home side took complete control of the contest. Pollok dominated possession, managed the game intelligently and gave Albion very little opportunity to threaten at the other end, with the defence remaining solid while the attacking players continued to push forward.
Their pressure was rewarded again in the 53rd minute with another excellent finish from inside the six-yard box, driven into the roof of the net to make it 5–1.
Albion Rovers continued to compete and never stopped trying to find a way back into the match, but they were unable to gain any real foothold against a Pollok side that looked composed and in control. One Albion player who deserves special mention was Jonathan Page, wearing number 4, who produced an excellent individual performance at the back despite the difficult afternoon for the visitors.
In the end, Pollok were worthy winners and delivered a confident, polished display from start to finish. The result will also give them plenty of belief ahead of next Saturday, when the two sides meet again at Newlandsfield Park in the First Round of the Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup.
