RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 2 - 0 DUNDONALD BLUEBELL
Rutherglen Glencairn FC booked their place in the next round of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup with a deserved 2–0 victory over Dundonald Bluebell at the Hamish B. Allan Stadium.
The Glens made a strong start and opened the scoring in the 8th minute following a well-worked move down the left-hand side. The attack was finished with a powerful strike from inside the 18-yard box, driven low into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Rutherglen went on to dominate the majority of the first half and created a number of opportunities to extend their lead. Dundonald’s goalkeeper, however, produced several excellent saves to keep his side in the contest. At the other end, Bluebell’s only real opening of the half was denied by a superb double save from the Glens keeper.
HALF-TIME: Rutherglen Glencairn 1–0 Dundonald Bluebell
Dundonald began the second half with more purpose, but ten minutes after the restart Rutherglen doubled their advantage. A pass played from just inside the Glens half beat the Bluebell defensive line, despite appeals for offside, and released the Rutherglen number nine. He showed great composure to carry the ball forward, round the advancing goalkeeper and roll it into the empty net for 2–0.
From there, the pattern of the match returned to much of what had been seen in the first half. Rutherglen continued to play with energy, confidence and commitment, while Dundonald struggled to find a way into the contest.
The visitors did have one second-half opportunity, but the Glens goalkeeper was equal to it, tipping a shot over the crossbar. Aside from that, he had relatively little to do as Rutherglen remained solid defensively and controlled the game well.
In the end, it was a thoroughly deserved victory for Rutherglen Glencairn, whose performance across the 90 minutes proved too strong for Dundonald Bluebell.
