Sauchie Juniors FC and Newtongrange Star shared the points at Beechwood Park after an entertaining and highly competitive 1–1 draw in the East of Scotland Football League Premier Division.
Sauchie made a blistering start and were ahead inside just five minutes, producing a well-worked move that caught Newtongrange cold and gave the home side the perfect opening to the game. From there, both teams settled into a competitive first half, with neither side willing to give much away.
The complexion of the match changed on 35 minutes when Sauchie were reduced to ten men following a straight red card for a last-man challenge. The home side were forced to reorganise for the remainder of the half, but they defended with discipline and took their slender 1–0 advantage into the break.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with both teams creating opportunities but struggling to find the decisive finish. Newtongrange gradually began to enjoy more of the ball and were starting to dominate long spells of play, even after they too were reduced to ten men following a second yellow card.
Their pressure finally told on 70 minutes when they produced a moment of real quality to level the match, scoring with an absolutely superb strike that gave the Sauchie goalkeeper little chance.
With the game now finely balanced, both sides continued to push for a winner. Sauchie had a golden opportunity to steal all three points late on, but another promising chance went begging.
In the end, a 1–1 draw felt a fair reflection of a hard-fought contest in which both teams showed plenty of determination and character. Sauchie remain in 6th place with 7 points from 3 matches, while Newtongrange stay 7th with 7 points from 5 games.
