University of Stirling booked their place in the next round of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup with an entertaining 4–2 victory over St Andrews United F.C. in a match that produced six goals and plenty of attacking football.
Despite the final scoreline, St Andrews United can take plenty of positives from an encouraging performance. Twice they found themselves behind and twice they battled back to level the match, demonstrating great character and determination against higher-league opposition.
University of Stirling started brightly, dominating possession with their quick passing and high-tempo approach. Their early pressure eventually paid off as they opened the scoring, but St Andrews responded well, refusing to let the game slip away and deservedly drawing level after a well-worked attacking move.
The hosts continued to dictate much of the play and regained the lead, only for St Andrews to hit back once again and make it 2–2, ensuring the sides went into the latter stages of the contest with everything still to play for.
As the game wore on, University of Stirling's superior pace and movement began to tell. Their ability to move the ball quickly stretched the St Andrews defence, and the Lowland League side restored their advantage before adding a fourth goal to put the tie beyond reach.
St Andrews will undoubtedly look back at several excellent opportunities that could have changed the outcome. On another evening, greater composure in front of goal may well have seen the visitors edge in front, but missed chances ultimately proved costly against a quality University of Stirling side.
Although disappointed to exit the competition, St Andrews United can take encouragement from a spirited display against strong opposition. Their commitment, attacking intent and ability to compete for long periods suggest there is plenty to be optimistic about as they turn their attention back to East of Scotland Premier Division action.
For University of Stirling, it was a thoroughly deserved victory. Their fast-paced, attacking football caused problems throughout the evening, and they progress to the next round as worthy winners.
